The Pre-IB Academic Program

This is a program for students who are about to enter an IB program in September 2010 or January 2011. Over the three weeks of the program you will attend subject and level-specific units in all of the IB diploma groups and classes will include:

English

This class will be a detailed introduction to the IB English syllabus (A1/A2 or B) of your choice.

Key Learning Points

  • Practice in writing skills and writing literary essays.
  • Instruction on writing commentaries and making oral presentations.
  • Writing strategies with particular emphasis on writing for examinations, text analysis and draft revisions.
  • Review of recent examination questions.

Mathematics

This class will be a detailed introduction to the IB syllabus of your choice (HL or SL).

Key Learning Points

  • Presentations of assessment criteria and portfolio/project work.
  • Introduction to mathematical investigations and IB internal assessment work.
  • Applications involving a graphics calculator.
  • Practice with recent examination questions.

Science

This class will be detailed introduction to the IB syllabus of your choice (Biology, Chemistry or Physics).

Key Learning Points

  • Introduction to the principles of the scientific method
  • Participation and design of scientific experiments
  • Development of your experimental report writing skill, formulation of hypotheses
  • Improvement of data collection and analysis skills and techniques in answering recent exam questions

Individuals and Society

This class will be a detailed introduction to the IB syllabus of your choice (History or Economics).

Key Learning Points

  • Development of essay writing skills, text handling and commentary skills.
  • Practice gathering and organising information.
  • Application and use of relevant technology.
  • Explore how to connect paragraphs, use expository writing skills and develop purposeful conclusions.

Theory of Knowledge

This class will be an in-depth look at what TOK is and its importance in your IB diploma

Key Learning Points

  • Exposure to the ways of formulating an opinion and substantiating them with evidence
  • Developing viewpoints on an issue of current relevance
  • Engagement in thoughtful and purposeful debate and
  • Enquiry into different ways of knowing knowledge based on reading, discussion and questioning.

Research, Oral Presentation and Writing Skills

This class will be an introduction to developing arguments to support ideas and integrating references.

Key Learning Points

  • Discover how to plan and deliver a presentation.
  • Developing viewpoints on an issue of current relevance
  • Engagement in thoughtful and purposeful debate and
  • Enquiry into different ways of knowing knowledge based on reading, discussion and questioning.
