Mid IB Optional Afternoon Classes

You can choose which optional afternoon class you wish to take and these will enable you to gain new knowledge or improve your existing skills. You can choose two subjects each week. Each subject gives you four one hour classes per week.

English A Literature Analysis

A literary commentary is required in paper 1 for English A: Literature HL & SL students. This class helps you to understand what is required of you and how to approach this type of commentary in an effective manner. Students will be given the opportunity to work on their literary commentary skills and an analysis of common errors in writing and will be provided with practical advice on peer editing and revising drafts.

Theory of Knowledge and Writing the TOK Essay

TOK is an integral component of your IB diploma program and the study of the issues raised in TOK classes will help you to address and debated the many ‘problematic’ areas of other fields of study. You will be taught how to construct a fair and impartial argument and how to present your point of view in essays and debate, in order to support or oppose your own or others ideas.

Team Games & Sports

Our expert coach has the experience and knowledge to provide support in team games and sports to students of any ability or confidence level. These classes will provide you with opportunity to have fun whilst playing a selection of team games. Students taking the course will decide, with the assistance of the coach, what sports they wish to play and these may include ultimate Frisbee, baseball, basketball, volleyball or football. During this class you will get the opportunity to make friends and enjoy yourself whilst developing your sporting skills.

Internal Assessment in History, Economics or Science

Teacher assessment is used in many IB subject areas and this class will examine the requirements of internal assessment in whichever subject area you choose. Your teacher will assist you with the focus of your chosen areas and provide you with the necessary skills to improve you research and study habits. They will help you to improve your techniques of gathering, organising, writing and presenting information.

SAT (I)Test Preparation in Maths, Critical Reading and Writing

As you know, nearly every college in the USA accepts the SAT as part of its admission procedures and many of you will be applying to US Universities. Our afternoon test practice classes will enable students to be better prepared for the SAT tests by improving the skills necessary to maximise their scores. Separate classes are available for each of the above areas and you should choose the practice classes that suit your needs.

ACT Test Preparation in English, Reading and Mathematics and Science

Competition for university places can be fierce and college readiness assessment scores are a vital tool when applying to US and Canadian universities. The ACT is a standardized test which is now extremely popular and has recently surpassed the SAT in total test-takers. It is a test which measures high school school students’ general education and their capability to complete college-level work.

Extended Essay Advice

You may wish to take extra individual advice for your Extended Essay with our experienced and well-qualified teachers. You will receive up to two hours of individual assistance with your essay during your stay at Stanford. The advice given will include a consideration of general and subject-specific criteria and will take place at times arranged between individual students and teachers.
